Iapetus and Clymene

Iapetus (Gr. Ιαπετος) is a first generation Titan son of Ouranos and Gaia.

Clymen and Hera

According to Hesiod, he is the husband of the eldest daughter of the Oceans, Clymene (Gr. Κλυμηνη) She is described as Hera’s companion lady as shown for example in the vase opposite. It should not be confused with the nymph Clymene, Helios’ wife.

He is the father of Prometheus, Epimetheus, Atlas, and Menoetius.

However, according to Apollodorus, Iapetus’ wife is the Asian Oceanid, which is sometimes confused with Promethee’s wife.
But we also mention Asopis, the daughter of Asopos and even Libya (or Libya).

As he was the father of Promethee the Greeks considered him as the ancestor of the human race.
Zeus threw him into Tartarus with the other Titans during the Titanomachy.
