JD_7972 The Lady with the Unicorn, A Mon Seul Desir, Old World French Tapestry

This is a magnificent old style tapestry; it was hand jacquard woven in Belgium. This is a reproduction of the last and most famous of the six tapestries known as "The Lady with the Unicorn. Belgian jacquard tapestries are known for their fine intricate weaving, detailed design and durability.

The original tapestries are housed in the Musee National du Moyen Age Thermes de Cluny in Paris, where they housed in their own special circular room. They are among the great works of art of any kind, and are among the most well known and beloved of the national treasures of France. They were woven in Brussels in 1470, probably in the school of Bruges.

In this series of tapestries, each tapestry represents one of the five senses, except for this last, most famous one. This tapestry is named "A Mon Seul Desir" which translates to "To my only desire". It depicts a graceful lady surrounded by a unicorn representing purity, a lion representing strength and a lapdog, the guardian of virtue. She is seen removing or rejecting a casket of jewels, presumably in favor of love or wisdom, depending on the interpretation one believes.

This tapestry is 44 inches high by 60 inches wide. It is very finely made, the weave is so fine that it looks almost like a painting. The background of this tapestry is the famous mille fleurs style (thousands of flowers), which is not only beautiful, but is also the classic medieval background style.

This heirloom quality tapestry looks like an oil painting or an old world tapestry. Hand woven on the finest quality jacquard loom, the weaving in this tapestry is so detailed that the scene looks like a photograph.
